18 December 2015

Anita has her hair done . . .
Anita is having her hair done in the salon, prior to going to Swansea with Diane;  she goes on about having received a card from Wil.
. . . and goes on and on about Wil . . .
“A home-made card, full of glitter – when I opened it, the place was showered – and I had just vacuumed!   Katie must be filling time in her maternity leave – how she has time to make cards I don’t know!”
. . . which naturally upsets his mother
Sheryl has become more and more upset during this, and retires to the back room;  Anita and Diane leave, as they are going shopping and have a bus to catch;
Sheryl is in floods of tears
meanwhile Sheryl stands with tears streaming down her face.
Gethin is surprised to see Chester at the garage, as the school has an inset day;
"He's doing some work experience"
Garry explains he is on work experience during the holidays.   “He just wants a break from Siôn – you can’t blame him, can you?”   Gethin is not happy with Chester being there, describing him as a liability,
"I'm the boss – you do what I tell you!"
but Garry points out, “I’m the boss – you do what I tell you!”
Sheryl proposes going to Canada . . .
Sheryl has looked up flights to Canada on her laptop, and rings Darren, suggesting she flies over there for Christmas.   She is somewhat deflated to hear that they are going skiing;
. . . but her hopes are dashed
“Of course I understand,” she says.
Two inebriated Santas
In Swansea, after they have been passed by two drunken Father Christmases,
Anita realises what they are up to
Kelly meets them and Anita realises this a cunning ruse to get her out for some drinks.
"I'm not your servant!"
Chester comes to watch Gethin working, and is ordered back into the office;  “No – I’m not your servant!” replies Chester.
"Fetch some coffees"
Gethin then asks him to get some coffees from the café, and again the response is, “Uncle Garry is the boss, you’re the worker and I’m the boss’s nephew – so you fetch the coffees!”
"Don't play games with me!"
Gethin warns him, “Don’t you play games with me – you won’t get the better of me!”
"Sheryl – are you there?"
Dai goes to the salon and calls to Sheryl;  receiving no reply, he goes into the back room
She sits disconsolately on the floor
and finds her sitting on the floor with an empty bottle by her side.   He announces, “I want to buy one of those treatment packages for Diane.”
"Do you want me to find Hywel?"
Sheryl remains silent, so he asks, “Do you want me to find Hywel?”
"I've done something terrible, Dai!"
“No, he’s gone away,” she answers, and adds, “I’ve done something terrible, Dai!   I stole a little baby!”   Dai looks around and asks where the baby is;
"What am I going to do?"
“I took him back,” she admits, “But it was wrong, causing someone else the same pain.   What am I going to do, Dai?   I can’t carry on like this.”
Dai is out of his depth here
She pleads with him to stay for a while, and poor old Dai seems at at a loss to know what to say.
These fancy cocktails seem to be loosening up Anita
Anita appears to be getting into the party mood, as she brings over a tray of cocktails;
"Someone over there keeps looking at us"
“There’s someone over there who keeps looking at us,” she warns Diane and Kelly.
Kelly is wary;  “You’re not trying to set me up again, are you, Auntie Anita?   They’re all boring creeps, only looking for one thing!”
He comes over to speak to them
Anita however, waves at the stranger and he comes over;  she is astonished to hear that he speaks Welsh.
Diane tells him, “We’re not used to men wearing nice shirts in Cwmderi,” and he seems surprised that they come from there.
"You have to move on – it will soon be spring!"
“I know you’ve had a difficult time lately, but you have to stop feeling sorry for yourself,” says Dai, “You have to move on – it will soon be spring!”
"Everything will be fine then, won't it?"
Sheryl replies, “Yeah – everything will be fine then, won’t it?   You have no idea how I feel, because you’ve never had a child to lose.”
Sheryl appears to have struck a nerve there
Dai’s attitude suddenly changes and he advises her to pick a fight with someone else, like Debbie Collins.   “You have no right to hurt someone just because it makes you feel better! And you can forget the beauty treatment – I’ll find Diane another present!”   He leaves the salon.
Gethin tries to work . . .
As Gethin works under the car,
. . . while Chester throws things at him
Chester childishly throws things at him, until Iolo catches him doing it.
"What do you think you're doing?"
“What do you think you’re doing?   You’re distracting a mechanic, doing a dangerous job!”
Gethin tells Iolo, “He’s been winding me up all day,” and casually asks,
"Any more news about the vandalism?"
“Do they know any more about that vandalism?”   Iolo answers that according to Wiliam the police have closed the file as they lack evidence, but suspect that local boys were responsible.   Gethin jokes, “If only kids these days were as innocent as we were.”
He seems to be well versed in chatting up women
In Swansea, the stranger chatting up the ladies reveals that he works in London, but comes back whenever he gets the chance;  he likes going for a jog in the mornings, and says he likes the simple life.
"Oh yes, I'm very sporty!"
Kelly tries to give him the impression that she is sporty too with a tale that she did a 5k run;  after Anita denies knowing anything about that, she suddenly realises what is going on.   The stranger goes off to get champagne.
"All right, Jim, I'm on my way"
Back home at Bryntirion, Dai has a phone call from Jim, wondering where he is, then Sheryl calls, bringing a ‘top of the range voucher’ for Diane, free of change.
"I had no right to take it out on you"
“I had no right to take it out on you,” she confesses, “I just assumed you never wanted any children – I shouldn’t have stuck my nose in.”
"Just that she was not breathing"
Dai tells her, “My first wife, Alys, had three miscarriages before Martha was born,” and he shows her baby hand- and foot-prints.   “She was perfect – just that she was not breathing! It was two days before Christmas, 1981.”
By now Dai is finding it difficult to speak, but he continues, “You know what I said about time healing – that’s not quite true!”
"You'd be my number one suspect!"
Chester, still making a nuisance of himself, tells Gethin, “If I were a copper, you’d be my number one suspect for the vandalism.   You have access to spanners, and must have a grudge against one of the teachers.”
"I'll put you under a patio!"
Gethin grabs him and threatens, “If you carry on like this, I’ll put you under a patio!”
"Are you bullying a schoolboy?"
Garry is just approaching and accuses Gethin of bullying  a schoolboy.   Gethin’s reply is, “Sack me if you want, but there’s no way I’m working here with him!   This idiot is dangerous!   Ask Iolo – he caught him throwing things at me while I was under the car.”
"Go on, get out!"
Garry turns on Chester;  “Is this how you thank me for giving you a chance?   Go on, get out!”   Then he warns Gethin, “Touch my nephew one more time, and I’ll find a patio to bury you under!”
If that is Vicky – this must be Dewi!
As the stranger pours out more drinks, his phone rings;  it is Vicky, who says,
He seems to be in a tearing hurry to see her
“Hiya, Dewi!  Someone has cancelled, so can I see you?”   He tells Anita, Diane and Kelly that he has to hurry to Bristol to rescue a deal, and leaves them abruptly.
"The story of my life!"
“The story of my life!” bewails Kelly.
"You were right to let Wil go"
Dai assures Sheryl that she was right to let Wil go;  “Letting them go doesn’t make them mean any less in your heart.”   When she asks how he manages to carry on, he replies that he has had to learn how to avoid things, but she reminds him that they cannot avoid Christmas.
"Things will get better, believe me!"
“I told Diane that an uncle died on Christmas Day, and she swallowed that,” Dai tells her, “It helps that people think I’m a clown – and things will get better, believe me!”
Dai's eyesight is certainly rather lacking
Then he receives a text from Diane, at which he peers, myopically.   “She wants me to call at the salon, as Anita is worried about you.”
He gives Sheryl his phone;  “My specs are upstairs – while I get them, text Diane and tell her I’m on my way.
"We don't have to tell everything, do we?"
We don’t have to tell everything, do we?”   He winks at her, and Sheryl for the first time in ages, smiles.
Christmas tree lights on the blink?
As Garry wires the plug for the Christmas tree lights, Chester complains that he sided with Gethin, and calls him a hypocrite.
"I saw someone I could work with"
“You have a lot to learn, but you made an effort to make your mark – I like that!” Garry tells him.   “For the first time I saw someone I could work with.”
"We could be a good team!"
He turns on the lights;  “We’re similar, you and me – we know how to find the weakness in people, and with a bit of training, we could be a good team!”
