"I wasn't expecting breakfast in bed"
Gwyneth comes home early for lunch and is again questioned by Gemma;  “Why did you leave early this morning without saying anything?   I wasn’t expecting breakfast in bed, but thought you might have left something.”   Gwyneth says, “Happy Birthday,” gives her a present and a card made by Gwern;  “We might go for drink later,” she says.
Gemma looks forward to the party
Gemma thinks she may buy something to wear.
"Thank you for the idea"
In her office at school Gaynor thanks her lawyer for the idea of sending the bailiff.   Then Mark arrives with the school post, and she tells him that at last Hywel has signed the divorce papers.
"It's natural to be upset"
“It’s a big thing, it’s natural to be upset,” he tells her, “Remember, Hywel is the one losing out, not you!”
"Gwyneth is planning a surprise for me"
In the café, Gemma tells Debbie that Gwyneth has said nothing, but is obviously planning a surprise for her birthday;
Debbie and Diane have more important things to talk about
however, Debbie is more interested in talking to Diane about the council election.
Colin, in his Councillor suit
Colin comes in, looking very smart, and tells them, “Clothes make the man – or the Councillor!”   Debbie is quite convinced that he stands no chance, and continues discussing tactics with Diane.
Thai curry for dinner tonight
Anita calls at Mark’s with some Thai curry for dinner, as she is experimenting with a recipé for the Deri, and wants to try it out on them;  she agrees to help Ricky with his revision for the mathematics exam.
Gaynor watches Courtney
As Gaynor is reprimanding a pupil in the playground, she notices Courtney walking out of the gate.
Gwyneth has been given two tickets
A customer at APD is so pleased with their service that he gives Gwyneth two tickets for the Motocross tonight;  she teases Dai that it is because he does not smile like her.   “Do you want to come with me?” she asks him,
She shows Dai the Motocross website
“It will be a lot of fun,” and shows him the website on the laptop.
In comes Gemma with her dress
Gemma comes in, showing off the dress she has bought at Maenan, which she intends to wear tonight.   Gwyneth rebuffs her, explaining that she is busy, and when Gemma has gone remarks to Dai,
Gwyneth is getting tired of Gemma (like everyone else)
“She acts more like a little girl every day, expecting me to make a fuss of her on her birthday.”
Courtney sits, depressed, by the river
Courtney is sitting alone on a bench by the river when Gaynor joins her and says,
Gaynor has a word with Courtney
“Exams are never easy, are they?   You’re a clever girl and have worked hard.”
"What if that's not enough?"
“But what if that’s not enough?” asks Courtney.   Gaynor assures her that she has never failed before, and it is not the end of the world.   “A bit of exercise is good before an exam – it gets oxygen into the brain,” says Gaynor, and they stroll back to school together.
Anita helps Ricky with his maths revision
When Mark returns from work, he is impressed that Anita has been helping Ricky, and very happy to hear that she is again going to cook for them.   Debbie calls to tell Ricky she is going out tonight, and when she sees Anita there,
Debbie casts doubts on the realationship
comments to Mark, “Cosy – is there anything I should know?   You’re too soft, Mark Jones!”   This causes Mark to worry about where the friendship is going.
Colin arrives at Bryntirion . . .
Diane has just returned home when Colin comes in, intending to talk strategy with Dai, but Dai is all prepared for his evening out with Gwyneth;
. . . to find Dai going out with Gwyneth
she arrives with a crash helmet for him, and off they go, much to Diane’s displeasure.
"Happy birthday, Gemma!"
As Gemma is applying her makeup, CwmFM announces birthday greetings to her, from an anonymous caller (probably herself).
Gemma is expecting a party . . .
Then she goes to the Deri, where she finds Diane, but she and Debbie are going to the pub in Cwrtmynach for their tactical talk,
. . . but Diane and Debbie are off to Cwrtmynach
and do not want anything to do with Gemma.
"I just have to be patient"
“I just have to be patient,” she tells herself.
Mark thinks he ought to be "cooling things"
Anita insists on doing the washing up after the meal, and has arranged to give Ricky a lift to his exam tomorrow, causing Mark some embarrassment.
Colin canvasses at Llwyncelyn . . .
Colin pays a visit to Gaynor, canvassing for the council election,
. . . and helps Gaynor celebrate her divorce
and she tells him that he can help her celebrate the divorce, emphasising that she will be all right on her own.
Gemma tells Dan about the supposed party . . .
Gemma, still alone, tells Dan, the barman that she must have misunderstood, and that Gwyneth is waiting for her at home.
. . . but there is no party at home, either
However, when she gets home, there is no sign of Gwyneth, so she sits disconsolately on the sofa.
The strategy meeting must have gone very well
Diane and Debbie arrive back at Bryntirion rather intoxicated;  “What was in those cocktails?” asks Diane.   Debbie puts some music on,
Is this typical Councillor behaviour?
and they pour out more drink, wasting no time in getting stuck in again.
They had an enjoyable evening at the Motocross
Gwyneth and Dai come into the Deri, having enjoyed their visit to the Motocross;  “Skill?   No, that was madness!” says Dai.
"Gemma was getting upset about a party"
Dan tells Gwyneth that Gemma had been in, talking about a party and getting upset.   “It’s like having another child in the house,” complains Gwyneth,
"I'd better go home!"
“I’d better go home, or life won’t be worth living!”   Dai advises her not to let Gemma walk all over her.
"How could you?   You knew it was my birthday!"
When she reaches home, Gemma tearfully demands, “How could you?   You knew it was my birthday – do you know how special birthdays are?   The one day when everyone’s nice to you, when you feel you’re worth something.”
Gwyneth thinks she is over-reacting
Gwyneth replies that she did not realise it meant so much to her, but Gemma continues,
"A good friend would have organised something!"
“I thought you understood me, that we were friends.   A good friend would have organised something and got everyone together!”
Gwyneth explains that she went out with Dai, and Gemma goes on whining;
"All you think about is APD!"
“Oh, Dai – if he wants something, nothing else matters!   Since when have you been such good friends?   Since when has he been more important than me?   All you think about is APD – if you’re not there, you’re making them cakes!   You’re obsessed with the place!”
"It beats staying here!"
Gwyneth snaps, “It beats staying here, listening to you moan!”
"You have to leave APD!"
“I knew it – they’ve turned you against me!   You enjoy talking about me, making fun of me!   I can’t stand it any more – you have to leave APD, before they spoil what we’ve got!   Can’t you see?   After you leave, things will go back to normal.   It will just be the two of us – we don’t need anyone else.”
"If you can't live with that, you know where the door is!"
Gwyneth is getting tired of this behaviour;  “No!   I’m not leaving APD for you or anyone else!   I’ve had enough of this childish nonsense – you can cry all you want, but I’m not changing my mind.   If you can’t live with that, you know where the door is!”
Diane continues swigging
When Dai returns home, Diane and Debbie are still knocking back the alcohol;  “What on earth is going on?” he demands, “You’ve had enough!”
Disgusted, Dai calls for a taxi . . .
and rings for a taxi to take Debbie home.   By this time, Debbie has collapsed in a drunken stupor on the sofa;
. . . then takes advantage of the situation
he is about to rouse her, when he thinks of a better idea.   He photographs her in that state with his phone, muttering, “Call yourself a councillor?”
Gemma looks at Gwern's card . . .
Gemma looks at the card made by Gwern,
. . . and viciously rips it up
and rips it into pieces.
